This plugin will give you access to Google Maps, openStreet map layers and others, and it is very useful to make quick maps from. Open QGIS and go to Vector -> OpenStreetMap -> Download Data… You can choose from several options here - if your window is already displaying the extent you want, check the box next to "From map canvas. It is a desktop application for working with geospatial data. Output options: A shapefile or KML file with vector features.
